This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Collaborative learning is the core of my class of second and third grade students in a bilingual dual-immersion program. Students master concepts when they have the opportunities to share their work with classmates. In our classroom the sharing is across grade levels and in two languages.

My students are active, engaged and curious about new ideas particularly when we use our hands-on, inquiry-based science curriculum.

Our school uses Full-Option Science System (FOSS) kits that are aligned with California and national standards and every student is engaged in doing science in our classroom. Because they are lively group of seven to nine year olds, it is challenging for my students to share their science observations with their classmates because everyone is clamoring to see the small insects, magnets and other science materials we use in the science curriculum.

My Project

I am requesting an LCD projector and a document camera so we can bring science resources from the internet into the classroom and students can demonstrate their observations and experiments to their classmates. The most current examples of science and vivid examples of the science concepts we are studying are found on the internet. Without the LCD projector, I have to gather my students around our one computer in the classroom which is impossible for everyone to see clearly. The document camera and LCD projector will also provide a new, very effective way for my students to demonstrate and explain their science activities and observations to their classmates. Being able to speak about science concepts builds vocabulary, confidence and in a bilingual classroom it is important for students to learn from one another.

Collaboration is at the heart of our classroom culture.

By investing in new tools for my students, you will open up new avenues for them to explore academic material together and express their growing understanding of science concepts. The new technology will give my students opportunities to delve deeper into classroom topics and to share publicly what they are learning.
