Mrs. Osborne from Beckley WV is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Illiteracy is NOT an Option

My students need books! In addition to completing our Of Mice and Men classroom set, I would like to add novels for independent reading projects.

My Students

My students are preparing to be lifelong readers and learners. They belong to a tight knit community but struggle with access to resources available to their peers across the country. Despite coming from broken homes, poverty, and an area plagued by addiction; these kids come to school and strive to better themselves and their community.

These are students who refuse to listen to those who tell them they can't and won't accomplish their dreams.

These are students that try, in the face of so much adversity. These are students that will truly soar if they are given the resources and a chance.

My Project

The books chosen for this were selected as high interest reads used for an intended independent reading unit. I am blessed with a school with many readers, however, we lack engaging texts for our students. This would help us provide meaningful texts to a large number of students.

I want to provide my students with texts in which they can see themselves.

These students face so many obstacles, often while feeling they are all alone. Engaging and relevant literature can help them see there are people just like them who are able to overcome their hardships and enjoy successful futures.
