Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Art is my passion, and teaching art to my students is my love. I want to share my passion with my students and educate them, not only in the creative process of art, but also educate them on the world's most influential artists and show them what art is like around the world.
My school is an elementary school in an inner-city in a very low income neighborhood.
The neighborhood is so small we have no buses. All of the students live within walking distance to the building. We have students that range in age from four to ten in grades Kindergarten through five. The school population is mostly made up of minorities. The students that attend my school have never gone to a farm or to the beach let alone to an art museum. For most of my students, their only art exposure comes from my classroom. We have an extremely high transiency rate, so I try very hard to create lessons that will create a lasting and memorable experience for them.
My Project
I have some art prints depicting historic paintings or pieces of multicultural art, but the majority of the time, when I want to introduce a new lesson to the students, I end up pulling out an old art history book with a tiny 3" x 4" photo or trying to print a photo off of a computer. Let's face it, that isn't the most rousing way to get excited about an art project. I know that these videos will provide fabulous motivation for my students and will get them eager to tackle their upcoming project. These videos will provide visual aids for the students, show many examples of authentic work, as well as give the students a historical background on the concept, skill or artist we will be learning about. All of these videos will give me the opportunity to expose students from all grade levels in my school to the amazing art that is created all over the world, and will allow them to see photos, artists and cultures in detail.
Having these videos in my classroom would motivate, educate and excite my students.
These stories and visual aids will make them excited to learn and eager to create. I can use these videos with all of my students from grades K through 5 to help inspire their creativity. Along with my knowledge on the subjects, these videos will open a window to another world and another culture for every student in my classroom.
