I need a small library of professional texts related to best practices in reading instruction to help myself be the best teacher I can be and help my students cultivate a life-long love of learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is strengthened by its diversity and those passionate about celebrating it. This is my second year in my current district and the fourth year of my teaching career. My classroom is set up for students to engage in discussion, both small group and whole-class. I am an advocate for tables instead of desks, as it forces students to see that they are not alone in their education. They look at their peers, not at me, during lessons. The tables are arranged in a circle around the room, allowing for ample discussion and an empty space where students can present, rather than stand at the front of the room.
The goal is comfort and familiarity.
My kids are just that: kids. They are bright, quirky, silly, and passionate. They surprise me every single day. I thoroughly enjoy making them cringe with my own dorkiness, while also modeling that it's okay to be yourself. My students form relationships throughout their time in my classroom. These relationships allow them to be their genuine selves, if only for the period, and it's beautiful to see the facade of "coolness" melt away.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will help me tremendously in assisting my students in their learning. The professional development texts all focus on reading and writing strategies in the English Language Arts classroom. I plan to implement what I learn from these books in my everyday teaching practice.
My students deserve the very best.
I want to be that for them. I want to be better for them. My goal is to give them all the tools I possibly can to help them cultivate a life-long love of learning. I want to model this behavior for them. If I expect it from them, I need to show it as well.
