As a media specialist in a Title I school with a high ESOL population, our PreK-5 students are ethnically diverse and a reflection of the wonderful melting pot in metro Atlanta.
Regardless of their background, they work hard to make strides academically.
This was clearly seen when our students met and surpassed their reading goal for the school year! Many of our students who were struggling readers at the beginning of the year improved and were able to read on grade level by the end of the year!
Even though they may have different social or economical backgrounds, when it comes to reading, none of that matters. They share similar interest in book topics, have a love of reading, and are equally excited to visit the media center to pick out their next read.
I want to provide a space where they can enjoy reading!
My Project
My students are fast learners and engaged when it comes to technology. Tying this interest to reading and information literacy skills will allow them opportunities to share their creative work with their peers.
Over 200 enthusiastic students visit the media center daily!
The purpose of their visit can range from book check out, research to collaborative lessons with a teacher.
Students who arrive to check out are excited to see what new books lie in wake. Some know exactly what they want to read; Others peruse the shelves and struggle over which title they should select. With the iPads, students will create book talk videos to share with the school to assist in this selection process. What better book recommendation than from their own peers! Moreover, with access to digital resources and eBooks, the iPads will allow mobility and reading comfort (particularly when lounging on the reading rug) while discovering their newest "favorite" book.
Information literacy skills are crucial in developing lifelong learners. However, these lessons can be overwhelming and tedious for our little ones. The iPads will be used to assist them in learning these invaluable research skills in a way that will engage and challenge them.
