Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of us remember our first experience with a dissection in biology; the smell, the slimy feel of the frog or worm, the light headed feeling as you made that first cut with a scalpel. I want my kids to have that same (sometimes stomach turning) experience as we learn about organ systems.
My students are incredibly inquisitive.
They are constantly asking "Why?" and "How do you know?" I've been able to both explain and investigate with them, the systems that help our world and our bodies function. Now I'd like to expand their understanding by showing them the things they've only seen diagrams of in their books.
My students have already taken the first step to improving their education by choosing a charter school that has high expectations, has an extended school day and gives a ton of work. I want to continue the progress they've already made by giving them hands on experiences in Science to solidify the knowledge they are gaining.
My Project
Each organ in our bodies is made of an incredible number of diverse cells. Looking at a picture in a book doesn't show my students this. With this lab they will get the chance to examine each and every part of an actual eye, brain and heart. Then when we dissect frogs they'll be able to see how each organ connects with the rest of the body.
My students would love the opportunity to take samples of these organs and explore them not just on the surface, but also inside and under a microscope. This is the perfect lab to get my squeamish kids' hands dirty and keep my excited scientists enthused about biology!
We need supplies to learn about the ins and outs of our bodies.
We have dissection trays and kits, but need actual organs and frogs to ignite the minds of my young scientists. Help me teach future surgeons how exciting biology can be!
