My students love our laptop/projector system that enables them and me to bring the world to life on our classroom whiteboard. However, with our current configuration, anyone using the system is rooted to a single location-- the front of the room.
These amazing students are inquisitive learners who attend a public school in New York City.
We are a general education, third grade classroom. We have 23 students who represent the wonderful diversity of New York City. They are always enthusiastic to learn and use our technology!
My Project
Adding this simple mouse and keyboard will free both my students and myself from the front of the room. I will be able to move around the classroom to keep students engaged, while still continuing to teach. My students will be able to actively participate by typing and using the laptop, which they are currently unable to do. It will transform our classroom. In Word Study, students will be able to pass our new keyboard around, and practice typing (and spelling) the words themselves. In Math, students will be able to use the mouse to highlight their steps as they talk through their problem solving strategies. In Social Studies, we'll be able to use the Internet to research as a group, but now the students will be to practice the entire process instead of telling me the search keywords to try. They'll practice higher-order thinking skills and technology skills that will keep them engaged and benefit them throughout elementary school, high school, college, and their lives.
Both of these items are such a small thing individually, but they will make an unbelievable difference in our classroom.
I teach my students how small changes can lead to big results, and this project is a prime example. Every one of my students will benefit from the opportunity to practice their technology skills, as well as learning from each other sharing their work.
