If You Give a Student a Book- Author Spotlight!

My students need books by award-winning author Laura Numeroff such as If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, along with plush companions, to encourage their love of reading and their understanding of author's style.

My Students

My media center is filled with students who love to read! They can't get their hands on books fast enough, and many of them don't have their own bookshelves at home.

Our school has been designated a Title I school, which means a large percentage of our students are considered high-poverty and are on free or reduced lunch.

We are also home to many students from military families. These students may have to change schools several times during their education. Books and the library are oftentimes the first "friend" for them in a new place.

I strive to make the Media Center a place where students feel comfortable and welcome. These students have a love of learning and reading, and the young ones get so excited when they realize they get to borrow books every day! Resources are limited but we work hard to provide an inviting environment and the most up-to-date, high interest and challenging reading material for our students!

My Project

Students love to read funny books and share them with their friends. They also love to read books written by the same author. This helps young readers become familiar with patterns and helps improve their reading comprehension.

These books will help me create a Laura Numeroff author spotlight area in the media center to attract my young readers and give them some fun books to read and discuss with their friends.

The students will also learn about the author who wrote them. In addition, even my reluctant readers will enjoy the plush characters from these books such as If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and If You Give a Moose a Muffin. I will use these characters as a hook that will help the stories come to life!
