"A man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them," Mark Twain once said. Fortunately, all my students are fabulous readers, but because my school cannot provide me with bookshelves for my classroom library, I have had to put many good books in storage.
My students are voracious readers, with their weekly page totals surpassing even mine!
All of my students have found an author that they love to read, and because of all the effort they've put into reading, their reading levels have grown an average of 1 year in just the last 6 months! My students are socio-economically challenged, and many of them do not have access to books in their homes.
My Project
In order to provide my students with books they love, I've sought out donations and built a very extensive classroom collection! Unfortunately, my collection has now exceeded the space I have to hold it, and my district does not have funds to purchase a bookshelf for my reading classroom. I have many, many books in storage that I would love to make available for my students to satisfy their appetite for new books. If I can keep them hooked on reading by providing them with a wide selection of reading material, just imagine how many more reading levels they might be able to grow before the end of the school year!
If you can support my project, you will be providing students with an opportunity to increase their selection of reading materials and, therefore, their literacy skills overall.
Additionally, my students often complain that they cannot find the books they like with the disorganized classroom library as it is. These bookshelves would make it possible for me to organize my library in a way that is convenient for students to find the books that excite them!
