My Students

Competition at its finest. One of the "Big Things" in 3rd grade at our Elementary is the year end Spelling Bee. The day before the Spelling Bee is the "Third Grade KickBall Tournament". The two diamonds on our playground are no longer used except for the tournament, which means...they are bad.

The students in my class and my elementary come from a very big "sports" town.

Sports start at a very young age in, however, the competitiveness of sports has also turned a lot of students away. Each year at my elementary we put together a 3rd grade kickball tournament. Everyone participates and we make it a learning experience as well as something fun to end the year with. The students ask the first day of school each year when the kickball tournament is. They love to play, especially when the cutthroat competition is gone.

My Project

Students at my elementary have had their "specials" taken from them as a result of a failed levy. As a classroom teacher it is my responsibility to make sure they don't miss out on some of the more exciting things at their age. We have held the kickball tournament for the past few years and it became a school wide frenzy it which students of all grade levels look forward too.

On our playground we have 2 baseball/softball diamonds that we use for the kickball tournament.

2 years ago they quit being used for anything after school, as the city built a new park for athletics. Since that time the dugouts, fence, infields and bases have disappeared from what they used to be like. It used to be a daily spot on recess that you would find lots of children playing, now it looks like a grass field. With your help, I feel that we can get it back to being a "Field of Dreams".
