By growing specific flowers and creating a butterfly "haven," the students will be able to attract and observe real butterflies while learning about their life cycle. We will grow plants that attract butterflies like marigolds, cosmos, petunias, and zinnias. The students will also plant seeds that will grow into plants that help the caterpillar larva such as dill, fennel, parsley, and milkweed.
By planting seeds to attract butterflies they can observe, students will be able to have a real-life example of two different concepts they will start learning in the spring: All About Seeds and The Butterfly Life Cycle.
My students are innately curious about the natural world, noticing anything and everything. When we create our planter garden and create a butterfly haven with the seeds, small and large planter pots, sand, and rocks, we will have a place to help us with our butterfly and seed projects!
