IF We Dream it, THEN We Can Create It!

Help me give my students a 3D printer to use in conjunction with the IF/THEN Collection, to explore STEM projects and see themselves represented in the STEM field!

My Students

My students are eighth-grade science students who are eager learners! In my classroom, we love hands-on science experiments, projects, virtual lessons, and more. We are currently reading about what's new in science and using our STEM skills to build science models with our 3-D printer!

Studies have shown students learn best with a hands-on approach, and I have found that to be true with my students!

They have demonstrated creativity and ingenuity when given the tools, so it is my job to provide them those opportunities!

My Project

I have used the IF/THEN Collection in the past to inspire my students with STEM projects. I use the videos to demonstrate to my students that they can be successful in the STEM field, regardless of gender or ethnicity. My students even take control of the lesson and select their IF/THEN videos and projects on select days. Seeing women and minorities in STEM is especially important in our Title I school where many students do not see themselves represented in the field of science and technology. A previous DonorsChoose project, "If We Build Up Girls, Then We All Become STEMinists" served as inspiration for this project.

This project will provide my students with a 3D printer to use in conjunction with the IF/THEN Collection lesson "Demystifying 3D Printing" in which we will be studying how 3D printing works and designing 3D statues of women in STEM inspired by the IF/THEN Collection video "Statue Exhibit Sizzle" to print using a variety of filament types featured in the video lessons.

We will also be using the printer to print technological or scientific models in the classroom. We are eager to learn about STEM with these hands-on lessons and approaches!
