My students come with a variety of physical, emotional, and intellectual disabilities. I am a Special Day Class, and I have students that have Autism, Down Syndrome, intellectual disabilities, behavior and emotional disabilities, and other factors that make learning more difficult but not impossible.
Our community is a rural community that is economically lower than many other areas in our state.
Many of our students receive free or reduced price lunch and backpacks with food to take home for the weekends.
My Project
Most of my students have difficulty with fine motor skills, and we are always trying to find creative ways to improve those skills. Building and playing in sand is a great way to build those muscles and build the skills needed for writing. We practice writing our letters every day, and being able to form them in dough and have patterns to follow will add some excitement to learning this skill. Many of my students do not know their shapes or numbers, and by using our hands to make them, we will be able to enjoy the practice. Using our hands helps to embed those skills in our brains.
