My students are 97 fantastic and intelligent kids from the NYC area. They come from various cultural backgrounds and languages, creating a truly unique and diverse classroom.
Many of them are new to this country and struggle with reading and writing, especially with meeting the Common Core Standards.
Additionally, I have several students who do not speak any English at all. These students are quiet and introverted, afraid to even speak. Many students are being raised in single parent households and our school is Title I due to their economic status. These situations unfortunately have prevented them from getting ahead early in life and have not provided them with the life experiences many of us see "typical." However, from the moment they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. Since many lack access to technology in the home, I am motivated to provide these tools for them even more.
My 10 and 11 year old students need stimulating and enthralling academic exposures in order to help solidify the content they are learning.
My students need a more pragmatic approach to learning in class. It would be helpful to them to be able to see what we are doing in class and not just hear what I am saying. With the document camera, I will be able to teach to the differentiated ways my students learn. We utilize use the document camera for all whole group instruction as well as in smaller group activities. Having a document camera would facilitate effective collaboration among students. It would also allow me to model proper writing techniques and subsequently would allow them to display their work to the whole class.
I believe that students learn best when they learn from each other.

My students love to share their short responses and poetry and it would be a great asset if the whole class could see their work and follow along. The document camera would allow students to give and receive targeted feedback thereby creating an environment where they can take pride in their work. When students share their writing orally, the class and I are unable to help the student correct punctuation and spelling mistakes. If I could show them on our SmartBoard, the class as a whole could learn from their peer’s mistakes or their strengths.
