Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

106 years is the age of the building my students come to every day. Located on the westside of Chicago, our school serves pre-K- 8th grade. Our demographic is predominantly Latino with many learn English as a second language. The entire school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. Often, students eat more at school than at home. They are motivated and love, love, love to learn. Science in room 307 rocks. Unfortunately, staff turnover is high and resources minimal so we are working extra hard to get exposure to STEM. We integrate literacy, writing and science. Each student has a Science notebook, in which they do all their work. This notebook provides a reference for the students. Soon, we will be studying Space. Pretty cool stuff and my kids LOVE IT. Since we lack technology, we rely on models and hands-on activities to bring the Solar Energy and Space alive. Using KNEX Solar Energy Education kits will allow my kids to experience Solar Energy concepts. My job as an educator is to prepare these students for high school. Please help my kids connect to the world around them with hands on SCIENCE and STEM concepts.

My Project

My students and I love to explore. What better way to learn about energy and space than via experience. Students learn best when they are mentally and physically engaged. KNEX Education kits, focused on Solar Energy and Power, will allow my kids to work in groups and create working models that are powered by the Sun. They will develop a concept, create a plan and construct a finished vehicle. Students will engage in higher order thinking when they are given a solar cell and determine how to energize their creations using solar power. IF they BUILD it, THEY will LEARN.
