My students need 8 individual headphones so they can focus on their computer work and be successful. My students need a projector in order to utilize our Smart Board.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
First grade lays the foundation for all future grades. A positive experience is crucial to success. If students fall behind in early grades, they have to play catch up or become discouraged about their school experience. My goal is confident and competent students ready for 2nd grade.
I am a teacher of 24 1st grade students in a Title I school in Houston, TX.
Given our Title I status, nearly all of my students come from low-income, single-parent households. Most Durham parents do not have the means to fill in the gap for missing equipment or shortages in supplies for their children. Texas cuts to school budgets have depleted the money used for supplies and equipment in the classroom. As a Title I school our parents are not able to raise large sums of money to fill the gap.
My Project
Imagine a group of 25 first graders entering the classroom after lunch. They are excited and talkative. Some of them will get their turn on the computer playing reading games. They really want to hear the stories and play the games, but the others in the class are reading to each other and playing math games. It iÃÂs hard to concentrate, but if each computer had a set of headphones, hearing the story would not be so difficult. Hope they get here soon! The rest of the class wants to play, Put it On the Shelf, the SmartBoard game where students get to drag a picture above the word it matches. Getting to move things around on the screen, instead of filling out a worksheet, makes learning so much more fun. It is almost like they are noiÃÂt working at all! This game will have to wait, though, until the projector is fixed. I guess we can get out our math book and fill out the paper. No fun!
I teach because I want to help others learn all they are able.
I want to instill the love of reading and learning in each of them. My students are impatient to learn to read and having these supplies will help them move quickly toward that goal.
