Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In a special education classroom, students present with a wide range of academic, sensory, behavioral, and communication needs. Many of my students require individualized supports to access instruction, maintain attention, and regulate their emotions throughout the day. Traditional classroom seating does not adequately meet these diverse needs.

Flexible seating provides an opportunity to create a responsive, student-centered learning environment where all learners can access instruction in ways that support their unique needs.

By incorporating options such as wobble stools, floor seating, beanbags, standing desks, and sensory supports, students are able to choose seating that helps them regulate their bodies and maintain focus. For many students with sensory processing challenges, ADHD, autism, or emotional/behavioral needs, movement is not a distraction—it is a necessary component of learning.

The implementation of flexible seating will directly support students’ sensory regulation and increase time on task. When students are given appropriate outlets for movement and comfort, there is a noticeable decrease in disruptive behaviors and an increase in engagement.

In addition to improving behavior and engagement, flexible seating fosters independence and self-awareness. Students learn to identify what tools and environments help them learn best, an essential life skill that extends beyond the classroom. Providing choice within a structured environment empowers students and creates a sense of ownership over their learning.

I am passionate about creating an inclusive and supportive classroom where all students feel safe, respected, and capable of success. Flexible seating aligns with trauma-informed and student-centered practices by prioritizing comfort, choice, and individualized support. It allows me to better meet the needs of the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally.

Funding for flexible seating will have a direct and lasting impact on my students by removing barriers to learning, increasing engagement, and supporting the development of critical life skills.
