Mrs. Jackson from Atlanta GA is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need iPads to increase their letter recognition, phonological skills, and to help with foundational skills to become fluent readers and visual learners.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Despite many obstacles my students face they arrive with smiles on their faces and kindred spirits. They want to learn and their eagerness and enthusiasm shows. These are not your sit-down, paper-and-pencil learners. They thrive when they are up and given the opportunity to have fun and learn.
My students have struggles and challenges that most adults will never experience.
The area in which I teach has a 95% poverty rate. We are a Title-1 funded school. All of the students receive free and reduced price lunch. Many of the our parents struggle with addictions. Many of these parents are absent from the home leaving relatives to care for them. We have a very high transient population. This has impacted students' ability to stay on target in school. Most are not educated enough to help their primary age children with their homework. Despite these obstacles my students arrive to school with smiles on their faces and kindred spirits. They want to learn but struggle with processing basic concepts. These are not your sit-down, paper-and-pencil learners. They thrive when they are given the opportunity to have fun while learning. So, I have tried my best to incorporate music, dance, rhythmic chants and visual aids to appeal to their learning style. Their eagerness always shows.
We are living in the age of technology. Teachers have had to change the dynamics of their classrooms so they are more "tech" friendly. I envision my students being able to use the requested mini pads in a way that will help bring visual and tactile learning to a whole new level. These iPads will be used as a multi modality for learning. Students will be able to access educational apps such as iread to increase their letter and sound recognition, increase fluency, and to build strong reading comprehension skills. Having iPads will also allow my students to become authors and illustrators. Students will create stories with vivid pictures that will open up new possibilities towards a career in media arts. Many of the apps and programs that are offered on pads will provide teachers and students with instant feedback on their academic growth. Having an opportunity to see, explore and learn will enhance educational growth!
Your donation will provide students endless educational opportunities.
They will be able to explore volcanoes in Guatemala, rainforests in Thailand, and glaciers in Iceland all without leaving their neighborhood school. These devices will allow my students to be activity engaged in their learning and acquire the necessary skills they will need to thrive in a technology drive world. Your donation will change lives!
