My students need hands-on technology to maximize their individual learning potential. With the addition of iPads into our curriculum, we will further fine-tune our academic skills and share our digital stories of success with others.
I have the privilege of working with students ages 7-12 with a varying range of special needs. Students in my setting have significant challenges in the area of cognitive, speech, motor, and behavioral skills. Many also struggle with sensory processing in addition to their other disabilities. This directly impacts how they interpret and interact with the world around them.
Each day, my students inspire and guide my classroom team as we work together to learn academic, social, and life skills.
We are a unique family that works together to meet each daily challenge head-on. No challenge is too large and no victory is too small. Each day, the continue to teach me the true meaning of perseverance.
My Project
In my classroom, making curriculum meaningful and accessible is the name of the game. We focus on the functional academics that my students will need to become contributing members of society. It is not uncommon to see lessons on environmental print, time, money, personal information, self-help / daily living, self regulation and positive social skills. We frequently break into small groups of 2 or 3 so that we can provide direct instruction on a more intensive level. When students are not receiving direct instruction, they are participating in supportive academic stations that also incorporate movement, sensory relief, and life skill practice.
By incorporating iPads into our classroom and community based instruction, we will be able to provide further individualized support and opportunities for digital story telling that can be shared with our school family.
The incorporation of advanced, hands-on technology into my current classroom curriculum is a very exciting prospect. Not only will my students be able to utilize the iPads in the classroom to support all areas of learning, their ease of transport will aid in our Community Based Instruction (CBI) trips. For example, we can use our iPads to support us when we shop at the grocery store, order lunch at a nearby restaurant, or document other experiences in the school / community. I see many student-created digital stories in our future that capture our success. The possibilities are truly endless!
