My Students

My students come from every neighborhood in Philadelphia. They are funny, talented, smart and determined. They come from typically disadvantaged backgrounds but they don’t let that stop them. They deserve every opportunity that other kids are afforded. Because of our school’s location in Center City, Philadelphia they are constantly close to culture, art and history but are not really given the opportunity to appreciate and learn from it.

I want to be able to use all resources to help them succeed through COVID-19 and all of the switches between in-person, hybrid and remote learning

My Project

Throughout the inconsistencies of the past two years, keeping a cohesive instruction style for students whether they are in-person, hybrid or fully remote is a challenge for all teachers. Teaching students online and in-person at the same time requires multiple devices and even with a laptop the virtual kids miss important one-on-one time and material. Having an iPad would allow me to keep up with them on Zoom no matter where I am in the classroom. This would allow the kids to speak to me without fear of public speaking. It would also allow me to highlight, annotate and illustrate ideas and concepts quickly and efficiently in a way that students will respond to.

My students respond best to routine, and with the tumultuous schedules and disruptions to normalcy, being able to create curriculum that I can implement from any location would help us all immensely.

In addition, I want to encourage graphic design and creativity in a school that currently does not have a strong art department. By creating a Cricut club, students will be able to utilize an iPad pro and pencil to design projects, learn about programming and even supplement their math instruction while creating tangible projects that they can enjoy themselves or to also sell and learn entrepreneurship or community service skills.
