Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing, inspiring, adorable, and they make me laugh everyday! The majority of them live in poverty and are learning English as their second language. School is a safe, consistent place for them where they are loved unconditionally and LOVE to learn! Most of them do not have a lot of books at home and school is where most of their reading happens.
I love to share new, high quality literature with them that is outside our required curriculum and can expose them to experiences and life lessons they might not encounter otherwise.
My Project
Read aloud is a truly special time in fourth grade at my school. All three teachers focus on the same book. The teachers read aloud and each student has their own copy of the book to follow along in. In this way, we can expose our students to engaging stories, characters, and text that they would not be able to access independently. We keep our book sets year to year so this purchase would positively impact literally hundreds of students in the future.
We like to focus on books that help with our students’ social-emotional education and focus on themes such as friendship.
While academics standards are very important, we are most concerned about our kids’ well-being and how they treat others. Wonder is an incredible book that will help us lead important conversations and help us all learn the lesson that kindness is cool.
