My Students

Because I teach all over the district, my students come from families that cover the entire socio-economic spectrum, from very high income to very low. Some of my students are homeless, some speak very little English, some are deaf or hard-of-hearing, and some have significant motor or cognitive impairments. I also have students who come from homes with many resources. Some students, regardless of their backgrounds, are very musically gifted; they could benefit from a more challenging environment than I am able to give them. Others struggle with every new skill, but nevertheless persevere.

Playing a stringed instrument is a skill that lasts a lifetime.

Despite differences in language and background, everyone can participate in music - I just need the supplies to make it happen.

My Project

My school district has a high poverty rate which puts playing a musical instrument out of reach for many students. The music department keeps a library of musical instruments in an attempt to address this need, but there aren't enough instruments to meet the demand. In particular, we are short of cellos. This cello will go directly to a student who would otherwise not be able to afford one and will enable that student to participate in the orchestra program.

Telling a student that I don't have an instrument for her is an awful feeling.

I feel like I am confirming how little she has compared to her wealthier classmates. I feel like I let kids down.

Please help me provide dignity and joy to students who have few material resources. Music is a gift you never lose.
