This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a First Grade English as a Second Language Teacher. My students are learning how to speak, read, and write in English, some for the very first time. We are a Title I school with a high poverty rate.

With all the budget cuts our school district has gone through for the past 2 years, I no longer have a paraprofessional coming to my class to assist with small groups twice a week. Now, I must divide my time between the 19 or more students in my class that really do need a lot of one on one time.

I am asking for a Cardmaster Card Reader and blank cards so that I can record and write down a word on each card. I can also include a picture on the card as well. I can then assign the students to independently listen to and eventually read the words on a daily basis. It would be almost like having me in front of them reading to them. This will then allow me to work in small groups and it will allow me to have multiple lists of words in use at the same time.

You will make it possible for my students to do well on their state mandated reading exams. This equipment will help them gain more exposure to the English language and English words. It will help them when they have to read the passages out loud in English during the exams.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
