Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is a high school that serves students in 9th-12th grades. We have over 4000 students on two campuses. Our high school consist of 77% Hispanic and 15% black. It provides students with opportunities to advance their academics, careers and gain an understanding of diverse 21st century skills to be successful in the competitive economy.
A majority of the students come from homes where English is not the first language and all of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch.
Our population in the Diverse Learners program have a variety of learning disabilities and are reading below grade level by three or more years. Our truancy rate is at about 18% but drop out rate is only 3.1%. Our students who have IEPs are reading on average 3 years behind grade level. All of this data is according to the Illinois Report Card.
Our population is in need of organized school spirit events. Given the social economic background of the majority of our students, it is difficult to have the students' buy into after-school clubs, activities, and sports. Many of our students need to help out at home with younger siblings or are required to work.
My Project
Our students will read The Hate U Give, complete a literary essay on the author's purpose while focussing on the imagery and symbolism within the novel.
For many of our students, this will be the first book they have ever owned.
The students who read the book & complete the essay will be invited to see the movie in the theatre when it comes out. I have seen how falling in love with reading can positively affect my students' attitudes towards learning and reading! This project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word and help them grow!
