Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in my class have been diagnosed with profound to severe phonological speech disorders. Therefore, speech intelligibility is very low. They come from diverse populations ranging from living in single family homes with one or both parents or grandparents. Some live in poverty. Others are in the foster care system. My students are age 3-4.
The students that I work with want to increase their speech intelligibility.
They want what they have to say to be understood. They may become frustrated and stop communicating if they have to keep repeating themselves.
My goal is to help my students develop speech sounds & sound patterns and increase their intelligibility. The goal is to get them to reach typical speech development for their age before starting Kindergarten. They "buy in" to communicating with fun themes that increase their desire to participate & learn.
My Project
The students that I work with have profound to severe phonological speech disorders. My goal is to help them become more understandable communicators before entering Kindergarten. I believe in early intervention & want my students to learn and be heard. They are often frustrated because they are unintelligible. I believe learning should be fun and encourage participation. I use theme based curriculum to excite my students and increase their motivation & participation. The items I am requesting are for several themes including woodland animals and planting. My lessons start with a slideshow that I have created to introduce the theme. I start each clinic session with a circle time slideshow. It is helpful if I am standing so I can see my students mouths & sound productions. Also, the students can see my mouth as I use modeling along with visual & verbal cues.
