I am a second grade teacher of twenty students who wants them to understand reading opens the door to the world. I teach in a wonderful community school that services so many children that come from homes where education is not a priority, only survival from day to day. I teach second grade in a very low socioeconomic area. The majority of the students that I teach are from single parent homes, blended families, including many parents that did not complete high school or have no education past high school. It is my job and passion to open the door to the world through reading and education in a classroom that is open, comfortable, and most of all nonthreatening. I believe that my students can develop a love of reading, which is the bases for all components of academics, if my classroom is comfortable and most of all nonthreatening. I believe that my students will be more open to reading if they think it is fun and not school. What I would like to do is make my classroom less of a standard classroom with desks, chairs, etc... and more of a welcoming, friendly, and nonthreatening room with rugs, baskets, plants, and pillows where students can feel more at ease and open to learning.
