I Want To Read a Good Book, Too!

My students need 30 different novels written in Spanish, from "Harry Potter y la Piedra Filosofal" to "En Busca de Milagros".

How can we inspire a love of reading if a child doesn't understand the story? I'm a middle school librarian, so one of the most important parts of my job is finding a book for a student that will make him or her want to come back and read more. In the past couple of years, we have had an increase in the number of second language learners that speak mostly Spanish entering our school.

These students come into the library looking for a lot of the same books other students in the school are reading. They check the books out, but end up giving up on the book after the first couple of pages because they can't understand the story. When they try to understand the story, they get frustrated with the amount of time it takes so it's not enjoyable to them. The few books that we have in the library in Spanish are either old or what middle school students call "baby books".

I'm looking to start a collection of Spanish editions of current popular novels that are interesting to the Spanish speaking students that I serve. These students will not only be able to understand and enjoy the books they are reading, but they will also be able to fully participate and complete reading projects for classes.

These students deserve to get the same enjoyment out of reading as any other student. With your help, they can see that reading is not just a frustrating process that you are required to go through in school. You can help inspire them to be life long readers!
