Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 23+ students in a portable at a Title 1 school in Nevada. Due to our extremely cramped classroom I have not been able to find room for my manipulatives and subsequently have not used them as much as I would like. My students have a high ELL need and would greatly benefit from using a hands-on approach to math. They would greatly benefit from taking the manipulatives and using the highlighters to record and draw their work product.

Our class has been reduced to using paper and pencil math lessons because of our inability to find somewhere to put our materials. My room is covered with desks and our manipulatives have been put in boxes under, over, and around any available floor space. We have not been able to use any of our materials, much less record our results in a fun and exciting way by using highlighters.

We need the cubby system so I can easily access the materials and let the students use them on a daily basis as opposed to a weekly one. It will make my teaching more efficient and allow us to cover more topics, and gain a better understanding of those topics. It will allow my ELL students a chance to show their understanding of their knowledge and participate without speaking. We need the highlighters to excite the students into writing and recording their math work.

This project will help my students this year, and my students for years to come. It will give them a better understanding of math and allow them to visualize what they are tested on. It will make me a better teacher and a better instructor of math.
