Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a special education teacher, I not only teach my students English/Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, and PE, but I also teach them social skills and life skills that are very much needed to help them succeed in life. We work on coping skills and building relationships, both with peers and adults.
The students in my classroom have moderate-severe behavior challenges and learn in a variety of ways.
Our classroom has a range of disabilities and come from a variety of backgrounds. Our school has over 90% free/reduced breakfast and lunch program.
My Project
My students often struggle while reading about events in the past. Social Studies can be the hardest for them to relate to, thinking that "the past is the past."
Engaging students through exciting novels such as the I Survived and the Who Was/What Was series will help make previous events and important people come alive and help to make connections to my students' lives.
I have a few copies of both the series and they are well loved by my students. They constantly ask me to buy more and complete the set. Students who previously stated that they hated reading would actively look for the next book in the series at the library. They would share interesting facts that they learned and made connections to their own lives. These books will continue to help my students make those connections and inspire a love of reading and learning.
