My students need engaging books for book clubs. I have selected titles that address compelling themes: Justice/injustice, compassion, and empathy.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am looking forward to teaching two periods of enthusiastic high school juniors for English. These classes are college prep and include students who are transitioning from classes that were exclusively for English language learners. Our college prep classes include students with a variety of skill levels and interests.
Junior year is essential for preparing students for college and provides a great opportunity to engage them in reading and writing that seems relevant to their lives, concerns, and interests.
At this point, they may or may not have found books that make them like reading.
My Project
“We need to recognize that reading ought to change us. Reading ought to lead to thinking that is disrupting, that shakes us up, that makes us wonder, that challenges us. Such thinking sets us on a path to change, if not the world, then at least ourselves” (Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst).
I want to provide this type of reading opportunity for all students.
The books they will have to choose from include Just Mercy, The 57 Bus, Tattoos on the Heart, The Line Becomes a River, and The Sun Does Shine. Students will write, think, discuss, and reflect. They will do this individually, in small groups, and in conference with the teacher.
