Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school which means 90% or more students receive free or reduced-price lunch. My students are from low income households where most come from non-English speaking parents.
Sadly, many of my students have failed 3rd grade already and began this school year with minimal resources.
Despite the hardships they endure, my students are eager to come to school to learn every day. They enjoy participating, working collaboratively and motivating each other to work hard, however they are very limited on their access to technology. TOGETHER, with a little push and help, I am CONFIDENT our class will succeed and surpass expectations! NONE OF US IS AS STRONG AS ALL OF US!
My Project
As a 3rd grade teacher I contently struggle to get my students to complete their i-Ready sessions. Given the expected influx of displaced students from Cuba and Puerto Rico as a result of Hurricane Maria I foresee that many of my incoming students will not have access to computers at home. Therefore, my students would benefit from having 2 laptop computers that they can be check out and take home to compete i-Ready lessons. I will develop a check out system in which students will be able to take the lap tops home on a day to day basis. This will make an significant difference in my students' learning and will open their door to learning.
Research shows that children learn most when they are engaged in technology, this day in age computers open doors to valuable learning.
The lap top computers will be used by students in order to go on i-Ready since many do not own computers at home making it difficult for them to complete the required sessions at home. The contributions to this project will greatly benefit hurricane victims entering our school.
