Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Mrs. H, what is this word?" "Mrs. H, I already read all those books." These are common things I hear my students say.
Most of my students come from a one parent family in housing community adjacent to the school. Most do not have access to books at home or transportation to the library. Therefore, the only access students have to literature is at school. Many of my students are reading below level. One way to increase reading levels is to let students read books on a level that they can read with little help. We have a growing classroom library, but we need books on the Pre-K and K level.
My Project
The books that I am requesting are Level 1 books. These books include Rookie Readers, Phonics Readers, Powerkids Readers, and other beginning level reading series. Students will be able to read these books during their silent reading time. In addition students will be able to use these books to take comprehension test on our Accelerated Reader program. This ensures that students not only are reading, but reading for comprehension.
The more a child reads, the better reader they become. These books will provide my struggling readers with a greater choice of books to read. With choice comes motivation. These books will motivate my struggling readers to read more and become better readers.
