I am a Grade 6 Literacy Workshop teacher at an under-resourced school in Brooklyn, New York. I bet you would be able to read an article about nuclear physics no problem. You might have to think about your pronunciation of some of those scientific terms a bit, but you'd get through it. What if I asked you to explain it to me afterwards? A different matter entirely, huh? Imagine the frustration of being able to read the words in a book, but not understanding the meaning behind those words. Unfortunately, a great number of students are asked to this everyday. Stop the madness! Students cannot become better readers if they aren't provided with materials they can READ! A source of frustration for me as a teacher is the lack of "lower level" texts available to my students. Struggling students with third and fourth grade reading levels won't become better readers by reading sixth grade books. They need materials they are comfortable with. Struggling readers need successful experiences with reading before they can be pushed into more challenging texts. I am asking for funding of a set of fiction texts that will engage my emerging readers, as well as provide them with successful reading experiences. This library will be a valuable tool in my teaching. Have an impact on eternity. Make a difference in the life of a reader. Thank you.
