Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Reading cannot take place without comprehension. Comprehension cannot take place without a connection. A connection cannot take place if you have never been outside of your city. Or, can it?
The majority of my students come from a single parent, lower socio-economic household.
Many face circumstances and situations beyond their control. Many work to financially support their mothers, while also taking on the burden of helping to raise their younger siblings. Each year many students enter my classroom as reluctant readers simply because the hardships they face at home prevent them from finding the beauty in books.
My Project
Each year I ask students to raise their hand if they like to read. There are usually more hands down than up. I believe more students would read for pleasure if they read books where they could relate to the characters and/or universal themes found in the text. Research shows the more reading and writing a student does, the better reader and writer he or she becomes. By funding this classroom library, you will make reading accessible to the students I teach, and possibly instill a love of reading in some.
I love to read.
There are books I enjoy more than others. My students are a culturally diverse group of kids with small and large scale problems. Getting them to pick up a book and see that they are not alone is a gift that you would be sharing with your generous donation. Thank you.
