The majority of my students come from a single parent, lower socio-economic household. Many face circumstances and situations beyond their control. Many work to financially support their mothers, while also taking on the burden of raising younger siblings. Each year many enter my classroom as reluctant writers simply because the hardships they face at home prevent them from finding the beauty in reading and writing. The memoir project begins with a concept and is nurtured through weekly writing assignments. After months of revisions, the stories are shaped into breathing pieces of literature and published in a junior class book. My students leave my class in June as published storytellers. Despite the obstacles facing them, the transformation that takes place is truly amazing, and makes any of challenges I face in the classroom worthwhile.
