Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This school year, I have the privilege of teaching and encouraging 3rd-grade special education students who are struggling with learning disabilities that make reading and math a challenge. My students come to school with hopes of learning to read and write, but more than that, to feel successful and accepted. Although they have many obstacles, in class, they feel like they are important and learn to believe in themselves. Like Dr. Seuss said, "Every child can learn, just not at the same time or in the same way".
Our students walk into a class, that as the year progresses, becomes their school family.
We are together in the good, the bad and the not so good. We are there when they laugh when they cry, when they are upset and when they are excited. We witness the growth and milestones reached.
We are thankful for the wonderful teachers, parents, staff, and donors that sow seeds for our students today that make the availability of resources possible.
My Project
I have an old laptop with a Windows 7 processor. My laptop fell 2 years ago and half the screen is cracked, but since I just used it for my lesson plans and personal use, it was okay. But now that we have distance learning, my old laptop is not able to fulfill the needs of my class. I’m having great difficulties creating tutorial videos for my students with learning disabilities since my computer cannot be upgraded due to its limited capacity. I’ve been trying to have Zoom meetings, but it keeps crashing on me and I get kicked out at least 2-3 times per session. Today alone, it kicked me out at least 5 times in 45 minutes.
A new computer will allow my students to receive the distance learning education they deserve, because my old computer is not allowing education to be maximized and is causing frustration.
Many students depend on me to teach them for those 2 hours every morning before their independent work. It really becomes frustrating for all of us when I constantly have to stop because the images are freezing or when I hear them tell me that my voice is getting glitchy and that I need to repeat myself. I teach 3rd special needs students and they deserve better if I want them to feel encouraged and motivated to connect through Zoom.
My students deserve to have a Zoom Lesson that is comforting and helps them to feel at ease and a sense of normalcy, given these circumstances we are all living. They deserve to feel encouraged to join their school family in an inspiring and reliable environment!
