My students are awe inspiring. They are motivated, compassionate, resilient, and immersed in a classroom culture that insists on empathy and equity. This project is meant to promote social-emotional growth, offer trauma recovery and provide windows and mirrors for the development of identity, experience and motivation.
Students may come to me with a trauma informed identity, and it is my hope that I will offer them an environment that emphasizes how much they matter and that feels safe for boundless learning.
It is my joy and obligation to move mountains to give them access, tools, texts and the love (that part is easy) needed to move through trauma. Students will be calmed through sensory practices, yoga and mindfulness, but also with access to books, play and materials that can provide students a more nuanced perception of self and the world around them.
My Project
Children matter. It is essential that they are enveloped in a classroom environment that reflects that. These books, toys, and mindfulness exercises will give students opportunities to find themselves in the classroom, to build empathy and to learn strategies to calm.
There are few things that I have tried, in terms of classroom management, nearly as potent as teaching children that they matter.
In a classroom environment where there is ample opportunity to be seen (mirrors) and to see others (windows), children seem to become more established and rooted in their mattering. These books, toys and materials will help support this type of learning environment; the kind of environment that teaches students that they are significant.
Play is as powerful as literacy and math in developing the mind of a child, and when coupled with mindfulness practices, and texts to build a rich social-emotional curriculum, children have access to learning in ways that they may not have otherwise.
