Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The majority of my third-grade students come from low-income single parent homes. Unfortunately, many of the parents are uneducated and not able to help their children develop reading skills. On the first day of school, more than 90% of the students that entered my classroom were not reading at a third-grade level. These students are hard working and goal oriented, they just need reading materials that will help them to develop the reading skills they need in order to achieve their academic goals.

My students are part of a T.E.A.M.

because we believe that Together Everyone Achieves Mastery. At the end of the year, my third graders must pass an online state test in order to go to fourth grade. My students do not come to school with a love a literacy. I know that by incorporating different genres into our daily literacy lessons my students will reach their goals, and become third-grade readers.

My Project

Today's classrooms are made up of learners with diverse backgrounds. It is so important that teachers and educators help students to respect one another and make an effort to learn about each other's cultures. Stories about diversity like, “The Runaway Wok” and “Abuela’s Birthday,” teach valuable lessons of respect and understanding. Also, books like “Yard Sale” and “Those Shoes” can help students living in poverty learn that they are not alone in the world.

Quality children's books help to create a sense of tolerance and respect for other students.

By donating to this project, you will be creating a conversation within my classroom that will help students understand each other's backgrounds. This literature will help students be more kind and considerate to each other by making an effort to understand each other.
