My Students

"Cooking is at once child's play and adult joy. And cooking done with care is an act of love."~Craig Claiborne. Cooking in the classroom is not just food preparation but math and reading comprehension; art and cultural awareness, health, nutrition and so much more. Indeed, it is preparation for life!

My students live in a residential area of a sprawling urban city.

Our school qualifies as a school-wide Title I school due to the large number of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch status. Our state has been labeled "the nation's fattest." There is a noticeable incidence of diabetes, obesity and asthma among our students and their families. Although our students receive healthy breakfast and lunch options at school, learning about nutrition, food preparation and healthy food choices outside of school are increasingly important aspects to a holistic curriculum.

My Project

My students love to read and are especially drawn to books about food. The colorful and appealing books will be an asset to our class library. The books range from the humor of Amelia Bedelia and Fancy Nancy to the practical and beautiful photography of cookbooks. Classroom enrichment activities revolving around seasonal and thematic cooking are an important part of our curriculum. Cooking reinforces a variety of curricular skills. Reading to follow a recipe improves math, science and reading comprehension skills, i.e. sequencing. Experiencing dishes from other countries teaches about other cultures, foreign languages, geography, and provides a culinary vocabulary. Food preparation enhances organizational and cleanliness skills. Cooking together strengthens individual, personal responsibility and being a valued member of a team forms a lifetime of happy memories. Practicing and applying these skills will assist students to make wise nutrition decisions outside of school. This is a FEED USA project.

Providing opportunities for both direct and indirect learning in all subject areas through books and practical cooking experiences is an important part of a holistic approach to education.

Books are fun! Cooking is an expression of love. Combine these together and you indeed find child's play, adult joy, wise choices and memories for a lifetime. Thanks for sharing this project with us.
