I Love Algebra

Help me give my students some physical manipulatives, engaging games, and pencils for math. These simple tools will make a big difference in learning the basics of Algebra and mathematics. These tools will add engagement to my instruction.

My Students

I'm a high school special education teacher of 16 years. My students range in disability from specific learning to autism. I'm most concerned about my students with an autism spectrum disorder. Some of my kids struggle socially and emotionally with learning and often the environment challenges them.

I also co-teach two sections of Mathematics, Algebra, and Pre-Algebra.

Both of these classes have a selection of kids who have significantly varying gaps in their learning. It's my job as a special educator to support, modify and accommodate instructional practices with general education math teachers.

My Project

This project is for some basic classroom necessities and some engagement. Students often struggle with mathematics and don't enjoy completing worksheets. This project will help to change that.

The basics are pencils, a sharpener, and some engaging Algebraic exercises from Teachers Pay Teachers.

This project will help not only kids but also support teachers by using teacher-created activities in Algebra. These exercises include scavenger hunts, puzzles, and team competitions.

The scale is a way I teach students how to balance equations. I use fishing sinkers and boxes (for the variables) to give a physical manipulative to kids who are learning to balance an equation. Then they take 2 sinkers off one side, they have to do the same to the other side. Ultimately, they end up with a box(s) with an unknown quantity inside and the known quantity on the scale. This has been wildly successful in the past, I just need more scales. I am furnishing the weights and boxes.
