Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are thinkers, my students are learners, and my students have a great love for school but they do have challenges because they live in an inner city. My class consists of exceptional students, English language learners from around the globe, and traditional students. Most of my students' socioeconomic status is low poverty. A few of my students do not even have a permanent address, they move from house to house.

I teach at a creative arts school and I have never met such an amazing group of talented and artistic children.

One unique positive trait about my kids is that they do not let these life issues stop them. They have a love of learning and they work hard. Their present situation should not determine their future. Where they are from should not determine where they will go. I am determined to make sure my students have the best resources available to achieve all of the goals they set for themselves.

My Project

How long can you sit? This question has been researched throughout the years and we know that children can not sit still for too long. My challenge is how can I use more productive and meaningful movement in my classroom. Well I just attended the most amazing professional development course called B3: Brain, Body, and Behavior and it really helped me with this challenge. I learned that movement should be a huge part of learning, not just in a PE class. We were shown an actual x-ray of a child's brain who sat through a 20 minute lesson and it was compared to a child that went walking for 20 minutes. It was amazing to see that the child who went walking had more brain activity.

I learned an hour a day of meaningful movement can greatly improve children's concentration and spark their mind.

The equipment I am asking for are all supported by the B3 program. We were shown how simple equipment such as bean bags, painters tape, and a balance board could be used to help create a sensory room, path or a movement walk for children who are struggling in class. Hurdles that could help with gross motor skills and improve balance. The diffuser and essential oils will help to provide a calm and peaceful environment and relieve some of the stress our children are experiencing from life's daily issues.
