My Students

Many of my students have difficulty finding books that interest them. The high-interest Bluford High series has been a great motivator for my students. Not only are they reading, they want to read the whole series. The problem is that some books in the series are missing from our classroom.

My students are often reluctant readers.

I have a lot of struggling readers in my classroom. These include several ESL and special education students. They need high interest texts on their reading level. Our school library got a few of the titles in the Bluford High Series. The students really love them. Unfortunately, our library has no security system so many of the books are missing because students took them out of the library without checking them out. I want to keep kids interested in reading. We have some copies in our classroom library as well, but many have been lost or used up. Students have started the series and I would like for them to be able to complete it. I would also like to get other kids into the series. Completing the series has boosted the confidence of students I have taught in the past. Former students often come back to check out books from the series as eighth graders because they are enjoy reading the series so much.

My Project

My students need copies of the high-interest series Bluford High to supplement their independent reading in ELA. The great thing about series books is that if a student gets into them, they are likely to continue to read the rest of the series. High interest books are the best thing to keep my students engaged. They love teen drama, and these books have it, along with lessons on growing up. When a student comes up to me and says they don't have a book to read for independent reading I want to be able to give them a book that I think they will enjoy, understand, and finish. This is a great series to do that!

This is a great opportunity to give kids the hook into reading that they need.

Once they have success and enjoyment in reading they will continue hopefully for the rest of their life. Reading is so important and so many of my students are reluctant, but a spoonful of sugar can help the medicine go down. If it takes teen drama to hook them on reading, then Bluford High is a great way to motivate them.
