I Have A Dream...

My students need books about Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and the Civil Rights Movement.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of my favorite books is Martin's Big Words: The Life of Martin Luther King, Jr. I read it to my students every year. We discuss Dr. King's dream. It is hard to describe that time to a group of 10 year olds. My challenge is that my classroom needs more books about the Civil Rights Movement.

I teach fourth and fifth graders in a big city in Texas.

All of my students just moved to the United States. They speak many different languages. I have students from Mexico, Vietnam, Pakistan, the Philippines, and El Salvador. The are working very hard to learn English. I am very proud of their progress. They give 100% effort every day.

My Project

I am requesting books to teach my students about the Civil Rights movement. I currently show my students video clips and read a couple of books about Martin Luther King Jr. before his birthday. I would like to do a Civil Rights Unit with my class. They are new to the United States so I need to teach them about United States history. They are very interested in learning about their new home. We would enjoy having biographies to read. I have picked books that I can use during instruction time, books for our classroom library, and books that students can take home for additional reading practice. Each student could research an important person in the Civil Rights movement and we could have a living museum. My students will have many opportunities to read, write, and share with their classmates about what they have learned about the Civil Rights movement.

This project is so important because it will teach my students about U.S.

history. They are eager to learn about famous Americans. I want them to know about the bravery Dr. King, Rosa Parks, and many others during the Civil Rights movement demonstrated. Your generosity will benefit a wonderful group of students. These materials will be used for many years to come.
