Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my journalism class show a great deal of initiative and truly want to find ways to aid our society. Many have faced a multitude of obstacles in their lives but remain resolute in graduating, going to college, and truly living the American dream.
My students see journalism as an avenue to better society and expose that which harms our collective human spirit.
We are a largely immigrant school, and many of my students arrived from nations where the concept of an independent press was/is foreign.
My students are passionate at reporting the news and writing editorials that can motivate and advocate for change. They are angered by the attack on the field of journalism and the false use of the term "fake news" when it is attached to reputible news agencies.
My Project
Students in my journalism class need to see how one individual, even at a young age, can inspire the world. I would like to start a unit on editorial writing by examining the text, I Am Malala, to show how this inspirational young woman risked her life to make a true difference. Students will then choose their own issue and through the use of editorials, start a campaign to improve their society. Journalists, like other advocates, can have a major impact on society and assist others in joining their campaign for change. My students have the desire to improve their society and simply seem to come to the realization that one person with ambition can start a revolution for improvement.
