This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I don't get it," is a phrase that I often hear when I begin to teach my students a new math concept. I have been granted the opportunity to develop the minds of 33 fourth graders at a school that is primarily attended by English language learners from loving, low-income homes!
As fourth graders in the state of California, they are required to learn 61 different math standards. Initially, this is daunting for some students. However, with guidance by setting weekly math goals and encouraging a positive attitude of "I can," students find the task challenging, instead of impossible.
Children at this age level learn concepts better when ideas can be moved from the abstract to the concrete. Having math manipulatives to make concepts like area, fractions, and rounding more concrete would surely help my students quickly move from, "I don't get it" to "Yes! I finally understand!"
In addition to making concepts more concrete, tactile and kinesthetic learners' needs will be met. My experience has been that when students get to touch stuff and move it around they learn more efficiently, and with 61 state math standards, efficiency is a must!
Student use of math manipulatives in the classroom will be an effective mechanism for promoting student understanding. The more students experience positivity when learning, the higher their self efficacy becomes and who knows how high they'll continue to reach!
