My students come from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. I serve English language learners, students with special needs, low-income and middle-class families, and TAG students. My classroom is truly a melting pot of learners with a variety of needs. My goal as an educator is to meet these kids where they are, build relationships, and inspire them to be the best they can be.
"From little seeds grow mighty trees," a hand-painted phrase on my classroom wall, serves as a powerful reminder of the potential that each of my students possesses.
I want my students to realize that they can make a positive impact in their community and the environment around them. To achieve this, I spent hours transforming my room into a national park to motivate my students to put down their electronic devices and look up! It's time they see the world around them and go on an educational adventure.
My Project
Now more than ever my students are in need of quality literature to teach them powerful growth mindset skills. Their stamina and ability to control strong emotions is lower than usual; most likely due to the affects of online school and the pandemic.
The I Choose book series shares about real emotions such as anxiety and anger, along with teaching kids how they can choose to react with empathy and respect.
I will use these books during my morning meetings as a launching point for modeling and addressing the various behaviors I am seeing in my room. Reminding my students that they have the power to choose how they respond to any given situation is the key. I am confident these books will allow for some enlightening dialogue with my students. I plan on wearing the "Kindness" shirt to fit with my class theme to be launched in January 2022.
