I Can't Hear Myself Think!

My Students

Our school serves over 430 Kindergarten through 5th grade students in Portland, Maine.

Our city, community, and our students are very diverse and have a wide range of needs.

We work hard to ensure that we are systematically meeting academic, social/emotional, and other developmental needs of all our students.

As a school counselor, I work with all 430 of these students in some capacity to ensure they develop academically and socially, to help all students succeed though school and after.

My Project

A space to calm down is an important part of any trauma-sensitive classroom. Students at our school use the calm down corners in their classrooms to calm down, reset when they are struggling, or even problem solve.

Students who choose to use the calm down corner deserve a moment of quiet.

And, unfortunately, our school does not have solid walls between classrooms. It can be difficult to settle your thoughts, feelings, and body with all that noise around you! Studies have shown that constant noise can actually activate the amygdala (our brain's fight, flight, or freeze response). That's the opposite of calm!

These 30 sets of noise cancelling headphones will be designated to each calm down corner in every classroom. Having the option of quiet in each space can help give our students a moment of calm, and possibly help develop their ability to focus on their own thoughts and feelings.
