Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our elementary school is a culturally rich school, with a diverse population of 580 students, in Pre-K through sixth grade.

Our Title I school population has 92% of students qualifying for free or reduced-priced lunches and a high concentration of English Language Learners.

We also serve two foster group homes, for temporary and long-term placement of homeless children.

We do not see these statistics as roadblocks. We see them as additions to our rich diversity. Together we will help students to develop to their fullest potential: Creative, problem-solving, compassionate adults.

My Project

This year my focus in 3rd grade is help each child become a confident independent writer. Many struggling writers do not see the necessity in learning write, which causes them to chronically stay behind grade level.

My students need mentor texts mentor like My Great-Aunt Arizona, Too Many Tamales, and Miss Smith's Incredible Storybook to use develop their writing skills. They will see authentic writing in action- then apply the author’s craft they observe in the text to their own writing.

I want my students to say," I can write just like them."

My students will see writing as vital in clearly communicating their thoughts, beliefs, and feelings. They will write for authentic reasons. They will write book reviews, personal narratives, opinion pieces as well 21st century writing such as blogs and vlogs.

In order for my students to strengthen their writer's skills and craft, they must have mentors they can reference. This list of books will give students the skills necessary... to become great writers.

Writing is a wonderful way to express your feelings. It gives students a way to share and work through the struggles of homelessness. These mentor texts give my students something to connect with and springboard off. By expressing themselves, I will gain greater insight into their emotional, physical as well as learning needs.
