Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

We are an extended-day school. Students receive an additional hour of instruction each day. This determination was made based on our school being one of the bottom 300 in the state according to standardized test scores.

Additionally, we are a Title I school, meaning that the majority of our students come from low-income families.

Every student I teach receives free breakfast, lunch, snack and, if they are a part of an after-school program, supper.

Our school is also the most over-capacity in the county. Our staff arrives early each day to ensure there is sufficient supervised space for our students to eat breakfast.

My Project

My first grade students spend the majority of their 7-hour school day in our classroom. As an over-capacity school, my students only have scheduled library time every other week. Additionally, the majority of our students come from low-income families, meaning that many of our parents have schedules that do not allow them the availability to take their children to public libraries.

Put all that together and our classroom library becomes the most reliable way to ensure that students have access to books they can and want to read, featuring characters and themes they can relate to.

As a newer teacher reliant on used books that were destined for the dumpster, my current selection is outdated, with books that my students pass over because they are unrelatable and uninteresting.

Anytime I've purchased new books here and there as I've been able to, my students have noticed and been drawn to these books before I've even said a word. The increase in engagement I saw with only a few books inspired me to imagine the impact that a classroom library full of such books could have. Transforming our classroom library into a place that my students can see themselves reading is essential to their success as beginning readers.
