I Can See It Now!

My students need a large projection screen so that they can see the art, the demonstrations, the movies, and the step-by-step instructions necessary to the curriculum.

My Students

They say you're as old as you feel, and my small 30 year old movie screen just doesn't have the same flawless skin as it did as a teenager. And its previously snappy pull down system doesn't always keep it down. It's always a challenge to seat students, so they can view the screen at the same time.

My middle school students attend public school in a rural area in the northeast.

Close to 40% of our students live in poverty, and at my school we work hard at teaching literacy and narrowing the gap between the haves and the have nots. Due in part to many families moving to town from cities, the community is becoming more and more diverse, and this is reflected in our school. Being the art teacher, however, I get to help my students be creative and experience ways to express themselves. My students are capable, helpful, ready to take a risk, intelligent, questioning, sensitive, and aware. One student decided to initiate a bake sale to raise money for those in Haiti. They worry about the future, are sometimes hungry, don't always have a place to live, get frustrated, and aren't always friendly. Regardless of the baggage they bring to school with them they behave like typical middle schoolers. They aren't always lovable, but I do love them all.

My Project

A new, bigger projection screen will allow all my students to sit comfortably at their places without being "on top of each other" in order to watch the occasional art DVD, teacher created PowerPoint or film, or Elmo projected demonstration. My digital imaging students will be able to watch the step-by-step instructions for each Photoshop Elements lesson without straining. A proper screen surface makes images brighter and colors more true. This is desirable, so that when students look at art reproductions, they can better observe the details and be better able to complete the art assignments. A larger screen also allows for being able to project larger images. When I demonstrate how to cut a linoleum block safely, I need to know that all students were able to see and understand the process.

Technology is helping me teach more effectively.

Over the years, as I slowly acquire new pieces of equipment, I integrate them into my teaching. Economic times have required me to cut my budget again by 10% for next year, and there is no money for "extras" like a projection screen. In order to get the most out of the equipment that I do have, a new screen is needed. My current screen is at least 30 years old; I'd like a new one that will last another 30 years.
